Global Media Literacy Education

European Union and the Council of Europe, May – August 2022.

The project “Global Media Literacy Education” answered to the need of educating teachers to carry out Media Literacy cross-curricular, no matter the subject they teach, with activities which included a two-day training in Novi Sad, teaching materials production and promotion of these materials.

At the Training, held on 4th and 6th of June and, 12 teachers from Novi Sad, Belgrade, Nis, Loznica, Kula, Sombor, Sid, Zitoradja, Topola, Kragujevac and Leskovac. Training participants had the opportunity to learn how to implement Media Literacy in classroom in line with Global Education standards, as well as to strengthen their own skills for critical reading of the media. Trainers at the training were associates of the Novi Sad School of Journalism, and the topics discussed were: Introduction to Global Education and Media Literacy, Interculturality and the media, Disinformation and fact-checking tools, Media Literacy in project-based teaching, Media Production as a tool in teaching and Critical thinking in teaching.

After the training, these 12 teachers prepared teaching materials with a scenarios for the workshops which could be implemented in school within the regular subjects thought in primary and high schools in Serbia such as Serbian language, Civil education, Philosophy, Geography, Science, Language, media and culture, Marketing and Communication skills.These teaching materials were merged in one publication named ‘Guidline for teachers on Media Literacy within Global Education’. The aim of the publication was to inspire and encourage other educators in our country, through practical examples, on how they could realize Media Literacy within the framework of Global Education and in that way enable their students to acquire knowledge and competences that will make them aware, competent and active citizens of the global world. This publication brings 12 examples on how to implement Media Literacy in formal education in different subjects with pupils of different age.

NSSJ promoted the publication on it’s social media to those users who may be interested in the Guidline. In addition, the publication was send out to more than 50 teachers and/or schools in Serbia.

The objective of the project was to promote and encourage Global Education, especially Media Literacy Education as its part, when teaching youth and pupils in formal and informal education. Specific objectives were to: 1) educate youth workers about Media Literacy as part of the Global Education, and to 2) stimulate teaching Media Literacy within Global Education.

Primary target group of the project were youth workers in Serbia (educators in formal and non-formal systems), and secondary target group of the project were media literacy experts and activists, representatives of media civil society organizations, representatives of institutions, students and pupils.

The action was carried out with a grant from a Joint project between the European Union and the Council of Europe.
